Bertani Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2015
#1 Wine of the Year - James Suckling (2024)
100 points James Suckling
A vivid ruby color with a garnet tinge and super-restrained nose of licorice, oak bark, smoke, wood, cigar box, leather, dark chocolate, smashed violets and prunes. It has a fresh subtleness. Full-bodied and elegant on the palate due to ripe, filigreed tannins with long acidity and a toasty, savory aftertaste. One of the greatest Amarone. Corvina and Rondinella.

Bertani is one of the historic icons of Italian wine, founded in 1857 and widely regarded as one of the producers that defined the identity of Amarone della Valpolicella. The house is internationally respected for its traditional, long-aging approach—crafting Amarone not as an overly heavy wine, but as a complex and refined expression capable of evolving for decades.
The “Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2015” comes from hillside vineyards in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, where limestone-rich soils and elevated sites contribute freshness and longevity. Bertani remains deeply committed to traditional appassimento methods, carefully drying grapes after harvest to naturally concentrate flavor and structure before fermentation.
Unlike many modern Amarones that emphasize immediate richness, Bertani follows a patient philosophy with extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks and additional bottle maturation before release. This slow evolution creates a wine of extraordinary complexity, where dried fruit, spice, earth, and savory nuances integrate harmoniously over time.
The 2015 vintage, celebrated for both ripeness and balance, allowed Bertani to craft an Amarone that combines power with precision—showcasing the timeless elegance that has made the estate one of the benchmarks of the region.
