Château d'Issan bears one of the most evocative mottos in Bordeaux: "Regum Mensis Aris Que Deorum" (For the Tables of Kings and the Altars of Gods). This historic estate, with its fairytale moated castle, has been producing wine since the 12th century. The 2019 vintage honors this lineage, delivering a wine of regal bearing and classical proportion, widely considered one of the estate's best recent efforts.
The heart of the vineyard is the "Clos," a walled plot with a unique microclimate that protects the vines and encourages steady ripening. In 2019, the weather was generous, allowing the Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve full phenolic maturity without losing freshness. The result is a wine that embodies the "Issan style": aromatic, medium-bodied, and incredibly finespun.
Recently, the estate has expanded its holdings to include terroir closer to the Gironde estuary, adding a new dimension of depth to the blend. However, the soul of the wine remains unchanged. It is a wine of etiquette and protocol, never shouting, but asserting its presence with quiet authority and timeless elegance.

The 2019 D'Issan is showing well from bottle, offering up aromas of sweet berries and plums mingled with violets, orange rind and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, lively and nicely concentrated, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a seamless, elegant profile, it's a charming, perfumed wine that will offer a broad drinking window. The blend is dominated by an atypically high proportion (70%) of Cabernet Sauvignon. The heart of Issan is its walled "Clos" to the rear of the picturesque moated château, which is complemented by more recently acquired holdings situated on the same gravel terrace. Best after 2019.

This is a very pure expression of Cabernet Sauvignon with blackcurrants, blackberries and tar. Wet earth, too. It’s full-bodied, yet very tight and reserved. Extremely racy, intense finish. This is super precise. Classical.
