Chateau Duhart Milon Rothschild 2018
Château Duhart-Milon’s grand vin is often described as a model of the Pauillac appellation. The broker Guillaume Lawton noted as early as 1815 that “it is very robust, with a fine colour, and quite pronounced sappiness” (he describes the “sappiness” of the Médoc’s premiers crus as “something like the odour given off by finest sealing wax when it is burned”).

The Rothschilds' Hidden TreasureChâteau Duhart-Milon is the only Fourth Growth in Pauillac, and it sits in the illustrious shadow of its owner, Château Lafite Rothschild. For decades, it was considered a quiet, reliable wine, but recent vintages have seen it step into its own light. The 2018 vintage is a standout, benefiting from the same team and expertise that crafts Lafite, but offering a distinct expression of the western side of the Lafite plateau. The vineyard of Duhart-Milon is cooler than that of Lafite, which was a massive advantage in the hot 2018 vintage. While others struggled with over-ripeness, Duhart maintained a classic "Pauillac" profile—stoic, dark, and mineral-driven. The wine captures the essence of its gravel soils, delivering that textbook lead pencil aroma that lovers of the region crave. This is a wine of pedigree and restraint. It does not possess the ethereal grace of Lafite, but rather a grounded, earthy strength. It is a "connoisseur's wine," delivering the nobility of the Rothschild stable with a slightly more rugged, authentic character that demands food and time to fully appreciate.
