Château Gruaud Larose 2018
Situated on one of Saint‑Julien’s highest gravel‑plateaus and classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, Château Gruaud Larose has, under the Merlaut family’s stewardship since 1997, embarked on a bold journey of reinvention. Emphasis has been placed on terroir‑respecting viticulture, increasing vine age, and upgrading cellar practices to express the estate’s latent power with finesse.
The 2018 vintage stands as a landmark in this transformation. After a tumultuous spring of wet weather that threatened vine health, hot, dry conditions arrived in July and carried through to harvest, enabling full ripeness and concentration. The wine was matured in French oak (with circa 80% new barrels) for 18‑24 months, showcasing the estate’s modern precision.
Today Gruaud Larose’s nickname “Golden Rose” reflects not only its distinctive label but the gold‑standard revival of its style: gravel‑driven, Cabernet‑led, terroir‑rich Bordeaux that marries tradition and modern energy.
