The heritage of La Scolca is a testament to visionary defiance, rooted in the high, sun-drenched hills of Rovereto Superiore. In 1919, when the Piedmontese landscape was almost exclusively a canvas for red varietals, the Soldati family looked toward the maritime influence of the Ligurian Sea and the mineral-rich white clays of Gavi to champion the Cortese grape. This historic estate pioneered the elevation of Gavi to a global standard, treating the "Gran Cru" of the region with a rigorous tradition that honors the ancient seabed beneath the vines. By choosing to specialize in a white wine of such "aristocratic personality," La Scolca transformed a quiet corner of Italy into a beacon of crystalline elegance.
The experience begins with a luminous clarity in the glass, releasing a bouquet of white blossoms, citrus zest, and a whisper of green apple. Upon the first sip, the palate is met with a striking electric tension that pulses through layers of flinty minerality and stone fruit. This vibrant energy is masterfully balanced by a delicate, silk-like texture, a result of meticulous sur lie aging that lends a quiet weight without sacrificing the wine's inherent lightness. As the journey concludes, the finish leaves a lingering impression of bitter almond and saline depth, a clean and persistent echo of the stony earth from which it was born.
