Spice Route was established by renowned South African winemaker Charles Back to showcase the unique terroir of Swartland, one of the country's most exciting wine regions. The winery is celebrated for championing Mediterranean grape varieties and old bush vines that thrive in the region's warm, dry climate and ancient granite soils.
Bush Vine Mourvèdre is crafted from low-yielding bush vines planted in Swartland, where warm sunny days and cooling Atlantic influences allow the grapes to ripen slowly while preserving freshness and structure. The dry-farmed vines naturally produce concentrated fruit with remarkable depth and complexity.
The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in small batches before maturing in French oak barrels. Careful oak aging enhances the wine's savory character and fine structure without overshadowing its rich fruit and distinctive mineral expression.
The result is a bold yet elegant Mourvèdre, combining dark fruit, earthy complexity, and vibrant acidity in a style that reflects both the rugged landscape and Mediterranean heritage of Swartland.
