Unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums and cherries mingled with notions of rose petals, pipe tobacco, sweet spices and loamy soil, the 2021 Phélan Ségur is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with impressive depth at the core, ripe tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, saline finish. Concentrated and well-constructed, this is a serious wine with a bright future ahead of it. It's a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. The juicy, medium- to full-bodied palate shows symmetry of chalky tannins and fruit concentration. More refined, layered and long than it is compact or broad. Château Phélan Ségur is one of the most respected estates in Saint-Estèphe and has long been considered among the leading properties outside Bordeaux's historic classification system. Founded in the early 19th century by Irish wine merchant Bernard Phelan, the estate occupies a privileged position overlooking the Gironde Estuary, where proximity to the river helps moderate temperatures and contribute to the wine's distinctive elegance.
The château's vineyards sit on deep gravel ridges over clay subsoils, a terroir perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon while also allowing Merlot to achieve excellent ripeness. This combination gives Phélan Ségur its signature balance of structure, concentration, and refinement.
Over the past two decades, significant investments in vineyard management and winemaking have elevated the estate's reputation, with many critics considering it among the finest wines in Saint-Estèphe. The house style emphasizes precision and freshness rather than excessive extraction, producing wines that are powerful yet remarkably approachable.
