Clerico Barolo

Founded in 1976 by Domenico Clerico in Monforte d Alba, the estate is a cornerstone of modern Barolo history. Domenico, one of the original Barolo Boys, transformed his father's modest farm into a world-renowned winery by pioneering single-vineyard bottlings from some of the region's most prestigious crus, including Ginestra, Pajana, and Mosconi. His visionary approach combined a deep respect for his Langhe roots with innovative techniques, such as shorter macerations and the use of French oak barriques, to create wines that were both powerful and approachable. Today, his wife Giuliana and winemaker Oscar Arrivabene continue this legacy, maintaining the estate's reputation for producing pure, expressive wines that reflect Domenico's life-long ambition to highlight the land's maximum potential.

The unique terroir of Monforte d Alba, characterized by its complex calcareous clay soils and continental climate with significant diurnal temperature shifts, provides the foundation for this Barolo. Clerico’s winemaking philosophy is centered on the conviction that the quality of the vines is the ultimate factor in a wine’s potential, leading to an obsessive focus on organic grape farming. The Barolo is crafted as an assemblage of the estate's top vineyard sites, ensuring a balanced expression of the region's character. By utilizing minimal intervention in the cellar and a careful aging process—primarily in large oak casks with a small percentage in barriques—the winery preserves the purity of the Nebbiolo fruit. The result is a structured, muscular wine with silky tannins and intense aromas of red cherry and spice that elegantly captures the soul of the Monforte terroir.
