94 points Wine Enthusiast

Full bodied and concentrated without being overly heavy or tannic, this is a stunning blend of Shiraz (92%) and Viognier (8%). Hints of roasted or grilled meat and black olive balance the bold blackberry fruit, leaving behind a lingering finish of warmth and dusty cocoa. Drink now - 2020.

94 points Wine Advocate

The 2007 Descendant is composed of 92% Shiraz and 8% Viognier sourced from a single vineyard. Super-fragrant with a floral lift from the Viognier component, it gives up exotic scents of smoke, bacon fat, Asian spices, and wild blueberry. Voluptuous on the palate with loads of succulent fruit (a rarity in this challenging vintage), it has impeccable balance and 4-6 years of aging potential. It will be at its best from 2013 to 2027.

90 points Wine Spectator

A firm, focused red, offering dark berry and licorice flavors under a layer of chewy tannins. Has enough intensity to carry it through, if this sheds some of the tannin with age. Shiraz and Viognier. Best after 2014.

A pure, exotic, and lifted bouquet where the floral aromatics of Viognier—lavender, jasmine, and crushed violets—dance above a deep core of blackberry, tar, and smoke. Notes of bacon fat, Asian spices, and wild blueberry add savory complexity.

The Genetic Offspring of an Icon

The name "Descendant" is chosen with literal precision : this wine is the direct genetic and spiritual progeny of Torbreck’s flagship, RunRig. The fruit comes from a single vineyard located next to the winery on Roennfeldt Road in Marananga, which was planted in 1994 using cuttings taken directly from the ancient, dry-grown vines that produce RunRig. Thus, the vines are clones of some of the oldest and most prized genetic material in the Barossa Valley.

The connection to RunRig deepens in the winery through a unique "recycling" of luxury components. While RunRig is made by blending Shiraz with Viognier juice, Descendant is created by crushing the Shiraz fruit directly onto the skins of the Viognier grapes that were pressed for RunRig. This co-fermentation on the skins extracts intense floral aromatics and stabilizes the deep color of the Shiraz.

To complete the cycle, the wine is matured for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels that were previously used to age RunRig. This process creates a wine that shares the DNA and pedigree of its "parent" but expresses it with a more youthful, exuberant, and accessible personality—a velvety, aromatic tribute to the synergy between Shiraz and Viognier.
