The Genetic Offspring of an Icon
The name "Descendant" is chosen with literal precision : this wine is the direct genetic and spiritual progeny of Torbreck’s flagship, RunRig. The fruit comes from a single vineyard located next to the winery on Roennfeldt Road in Marananga, which was planted in 1994 using cuttings taken directly from the ancient, dry-grown vines that produce RunRig. Thus, the vines are clones of some of the oldest and most prized genetic material in the Barossa Valley.
The connection to RunRig deepens in the winery through a unique "recycling" of luxury components. While RunRig is made by blending Shiraz with Viognier juice, Descendant is created by crushing the Shiraz fruit directly onto the skins of the Viognier grapes that were pressed for RunRig. This co-fermentation on the skins extracts intense floral aromatics and stabilizes the deep color of the Shiraz.
To complete the cycle, the wine is matured for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels that were previously used to age RunRig. This process creates a wine that shares the DNA and pedigree of its "parent" but expresses it with a more youthful, exuberant, and accessible personality—a velvety, aromatic tribute to the synergy between Shiraz and Viognier.
