The Wild Soul of the Barossa
Torbreck The Pict 2008 is a singular expression of Mataro (Mourvèdre), a variety often relegated to blending shadows but here celebrated for its raw, unbridled power. Named after the Picts, the "painted people" of ancient Scotland who fiercely resisted Roman rule, this wine embodies a similar spirit of wild independence. It was crafted to prove that Australian Mataro could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the legendary wines of Bandol in Provence.
The fruit for the 2008 vintage was sourced exclusively from the Materne 'Quarry Block' in the Northern Greenock sub-region. Planted in the 1920s, these gnarly, dry-grown vines are rooted in rocky clay and ironstone soils. The 2008 growing season was warm, punctuated by a significant heatwave, but the late-ripening nature of Mataro allowed it to weather the heat and retain vital acidity while achieving massive phenolic ripeness.
Vinified in open fermenters and aged in new French oak, the wine is a dense, brooding giant. It captures the rugged "garrigue" character—scents of dried herbs and scorched earth—transplanted to the red soils of the Barossa. It is a wine of texture and soil, offering a drinking experience that is as intellectual as it is hedonistic.
