A Warrior’s Wine from the Old Vines of Barossa
Torbreck’s inspiration lies in reviving ancient Rhône grapes through the sun-drenched soils of Barossa Valley. Among these, Mataro (also known as Mourvèdre) holds a powerful, rustic charm — one that the winery felt deserved its own spotlight. Thus, “The Pict” was born: a single-vineyard wine named after a fierce Celtic tribe known for their strength and endurance — qualities mirrored in this wine.
The 2007 vintage brought warm conditions and low yields, concentrating flavors in the old, dry-grown Mataro vines. Harvested at peak ripeness, the fruit underwent gentle fermentation and was matured in fine-grain French oak for two years, allowing tannins to soften while preserving the wine’s bold personality.
The result is a wine that speaks of place and time — an iron-fisted red wrapped in velvet, expressive of ancient vines and bold ambitions. “The Pict” isn't just a name; it’s a statement of power, purity and place.
